From tartan to tweed and gingham to glen check, London’s AW18 runways were awash with the plaid-plague, with checkered-chicks lining the runways of Calvin Klein and Erdem like silk. It’s no surprise that here at OTL we’ve caught the fever. Buckle up and relax into your pin-check pea coat, because this is one trend that we think will be sticking around for a while…

There was a time we thought plaid’s only friend was the crisp white shirt, but our old 90s sidekick has entered the 21st century with full fashion force. And while the hazel-hued herringbone of Calvin Klein and Erdem did make us want to max out our credit cards, here at OTL we’ve pushed the trend even further by introducing a brighter colour palette of acidic yellows and avocado greens to match your style and your smoothie.

Dare to go double with Ghospell’s checkered co-Ord, the double-breasted blazer that dominated the likes of Stella McCartney is reimagined into a vision in yellow, with contrasting cinnamon check. Complete the look with the matching Ghospell kick flares, and don’t be afraid to be clash a little more by wearing with hefty florals inspired by Burberry for chintzy check. This checkered co-Ord goes against the grim and grey pinstripes of the boardroom for clued-up ‘Clueless’ style.

Our Summer fling with yellow blossoms through seasons as Daphnea launches us into Autumn with gingham-greatness. A simple shirt dress and yellow-on-white colour palette allows for bold colour blocking, or even pattern blocking, don’t be afraid to layer check-on-check because this trend thrives on some clashy-contrasting. And if delicate shirt dresses aren’t for you, grid-check blazer dresses should be every city girl’s go-to for “office at 9am, date at 5pm”. Layer over a shirt for daytime and dare to go bare underneath for night-time. While we love a boxy checkered blazer, if you’re looking for something a little warmer try one of Jakke’s tartan faux-fur coats for a cosy checkered dream.

Weekend-cool has never been easier as Ghospell fuel buffalo check into lumberjack shirts and shackets, and while checkered shirts were made for denim days, try pairing with a midi skirt for easy breezy Autumn style.

We accepted long ago that plaid will always be with us in not-so-plain sight, but this coming season sees the checkered-classic reinvented in ways that mix traditional prints with strong silhouettes for the power print of the year…we’ll be locked in this tartan trance for more than just a season!
