There’s something about fabrics being draped, distorted and layered that adds instant personality and charm to any look. Whether the fabric is smooth, stiff, shiny or soft it can create depth and dimension to a piece of clothing that perhaps wouldn’t be there when using a simpler composition of material.

Here are four textures that are throwing us into a fashion frenzy this season and our top tips for how to wear them…

Supreme Neoprene

Sports luxe has been deemed the ultimate cool girl way of casual dressing this Spring Summer and we for one cannot agree more. Here at OTL HQ we can’t enough of all things neoprene, especially when its teamed up with mesh panels and netting – the dream anomaly of authentic sportswear textures? We think so!

  Styling Tips

  • This texture can sometimes be ‘busy’ due to layering and contrasts of colour, so its best worn in simpler cuts and basic shapes.
  • Due to the sporty vibes, usually styles in these textures are oversized or cropped so it’s important that you balance your figure by pairing with something that is slim fitting.
  • Don’t be afraid to dress this texture up, after all it’s not called ‘sports luxe’ for nothing – a block heeled boot can be the perfect team mate for this vibe.

Illusive Lace

For romantic dressing, lace has always been a ‘go to’ for us - but what happens when you warp the fabric into a ruffle or pie-crust collar? It instantly adds drama to any outfit and this is the kind of drama that we want to be caught up in, and what’s more is when the lace is sheer, giving the perfect opportunity to play around with layering.

Styling Tips

  • Lace is extremely versatile so don’t play it safe and wait for an evening occasion to debut it. Pair it with your favourite denim and create the perfect, alternative to daytime dressing.
  • Although lace may look far from fuss free, it’s the perfect ‘go to’ to complete any look. Forget the need to accessorise when this texture is around, this is one fabric that can hold its own.
  • You don’t need to be a girly girl to wear this fabric, lace comes in a variety of ways. For something a little less busy, opt for a larger appliqué.

Revived Velvet

It goes without saying that OTL HQ is a strictly no velour tracksuit zone! But when Victoria Beckham made velvet ‘a thing’ at New York fashion week, we jumped for joy at its new face lift. Whether its smooth or crushed, it’s bound to add a little surface interest and excitement to any look, especially when worn in opulent colour-ways such as mint green and sapphire blue.

Styling tips

  • Don’t overdo it or double up! Feature velvet in interesting and fun ways, such as on the sleeves of a sweater.
  • Dress it up by opting for a skirt instead of trousers, this shows variation on how you can wear the texture and makes people forget about its dreaded past life.
  • This is one fabric that looks great next to other interesting materials, so dare to be different and grab a metallic skirt and some faux fur mules!

Visionary Vinyl

If you’re looking for ways to add a little rock and roll into your wardrobe, you’ve found it. This high shine fabric was heavily featured across SS17 fashion weeks, thanks to Dior and Sonia Rykiel. Vinyl is sure to toughen up any outfit and due to its glossy texture, it adds an element of sleekness to every look.

 Styling Tips

  • Vinyl is a bold statement and the thought of incorporating it into a look may be daunting. Not feeling daring? Well why not wear the texture in black for an understated look.
  • This is one material that can add instant edge to a simple look, so trust in the ability of this shiny little number.
  • This fabric may look a little high maintenance but trust us, it’s super easy to wear and looks great with a variety of materials, such as knitwear, cotton and silk.
